Working With Metal

Back when I was in high school at BGHS a number of years ago, I had a little welding instruction. I thought it was cool, but all I got to do was run “beads” down a flat piece of metal stock. Many years went by with no exposure to working with metal. Fast forward to the last 5 years and my buddy Jace Caldwell and I started building furniture. Jace had some experience from high school too, but it hadn’t been that long for him as it was for me. He had a welder and so he was the designated welder on our project.

When Jace and Danae’s daughter Maris came along, I had to become the full-time welder and woodworker. While I had done some of the welding, I was now the LEAD welder, the only welder! Once I got my rhythm, it really became a lot of fun. To further hone my skills, I watched a number of videos on YouTube, did some reading, and asked those who knew what they were doing lots of questions.

What I love about working with metal and welding is you can make just about anything if you can weld! I’m also enjoying the blend of metal and wood that creates that contemporary look that also has some warmth when you get the right balance of metal and wood. If you’ve got a special project you want someone to help you tackle, let me know, I’m always up for a challenge!
