There’s always something new to learn in this furniture design/build hobby come-to-life. With each new piece I build, I always learn something new, but I also try and incorporate new things I have learned to make each piece I build have “something” that ties it back to the look I try and put in each piece.
Not too long ago I got my first shot at a round, double-decker coffee table. This table was a combination of glued-up reclaimed flooring from an old farmhouse in the Spring Hill, TN. area. In order to accomplish the look we wanted to achieve on the tops (top and bottom) I actually had to turn the wood over and use the bottom of the boards to capture the cross-cut look of when the wood was originally milled.
The base for the table is metal and gives the piece that mix of metal and wood that so many folks seem to like right now. I like the differences in the textures you get when you use metal and wood too. The contrast of those materials looks and feels nice and it gives the piece multiple opportunities to resonate with other pieces in the room. Throw circles into the design mix and it makes for a lot of visual excitement!
